”New album from Belarisk - collaborator with Daniel ‘0PN’ Lopatin, following split tapes with Bee Mask and Bill Kouligas... Mainstay of the fertile, exploratory North American noise scene, Lee Tindall dials in a cross-wired, absorbingly abstract series of synthetic sound images on Type with a beguiling 2nd album as Belarisk - he’s previously recorded as Astronaut with Daniel ‘0PN’ Lopatin, and shared split tapes with Bee Mask and Bill Kouligas’ Family Battle Snake. With Moments in Shapeshifting he maps out an intricate, undulating topography of calving noise and haunting ambient phrases leaning to an architectonic approach in shaping surreal environments that exist at a state of flux between detached, synthetic and dreamlike, and viscerally immersive forms. Aside from making artwork for the likes of Ricardo Donoso, he’s been quiet since his last release, On Amorphous Dawn (2013), so in a way this new album gathers his thoughts; a fractal stream of consciousness buffeted by notions of ‘80s sci-fi and body horror, and bifurcating between passages of heart-aching lushness and scrabbling, waking confusion. It all recalls the heady effect of changeable weather systems - perhaps best relating to his New England locale - or the cranky emotions that ensue after a heavy weekend, sensitively - and not so sensitively - treading between those human emotions like an artificial neural network struggling to come to terms with its inputs and the spectrum of skizzy integers and dualities that exist between emotional meters. At times reminiscent of Tim Hecker’s dense ambience and at others closer to M.E.S.H. or Oneohtrix Point Never, Moments In Shapeshifting offers an enticing distortion of reality - a cracked mirror for us to gaze into and obsess over. It might be the most human electronic record of the year.”
